What Is HPPSC Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026?

HPPSC Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026 is a subject-wise recruitment drive for teaching positions in government colleges under the Himachal Pradesh Higher Education Department.

Although all posts belong to the same College Cadre recruitment drive, HPPSC has released a different advertisement for each subject. Vacancy distribution, reservation categories and certain subject-specific eligibility conditions may therefore vary.

A candidate applying for more than one eligible subject must submit a separate Online Recruitment Application for each advertisement and pay the prescribed fee according to the applicable portal instructions.

Applicants should not treat the recruitment as one combined application covering every subject.

HPPSC Assistant Professor Eligibility Criteria 2026

Eligibility is determined according to the conditions stated in the subject-specific notification. Candidates must possess the required qualification by the closing date of the Online Recruitment Application.

The broad eligibility framework is similar for most academic subjects, but applicants for Physical Education, Dance, Tabla, Music-Instrumental and other specialised disciplines should check their respective notification for additional conditions.

Educational Qualification for Most Subjects

For most Assistant Professor subjects, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • A good academic record with at least 55% marks, or an equivalent grade, in the relevant Master’s degree from a recognised Indian university.
  • An equivalent foreign degree may also be accepted if it is recognised by the Government of India.
  • The candidate must have qualified NET conducted by UGC or CSIR, or another test such as SLET or SET recognised for Assistant Professor eligibility.
  • The Master’s degree subject must correspond to the Assistant Professor post for which the candidate is applying.

Relaxation in Master’s Degree Marks

A five-percentage-point relaxation, from 55% to 50%, is provided under the conditions stated in the notification for:

  • SC candidates
  • ST candidates
  • OBC Non-Creamy Layer candidates
  • Eligible physically or visually handicapped candidates
  • Other eligible categories specifically covered in the relevant advertisement

Ph.D. degree holders who completed their Master’s degree before September 1991 may also receive relaxation from 55% to 50%.

Candidates should rely on the wording of their subject notification when claiming any marks relaxation.

NET, SLET and SET Requirements

NET, SLET or SET remains the minimum eligibility condition for most Assistant Professor posts unless the candidate qualifies for the applicable Ph.D. exemption.

Candidates who have cleared a State Eligibility Test conducted from 1 June 2002 onward are generally eligible for Assistant Professor posts in universities and colleges situated in the state for which that SET was conducted.

Applicants should verify whether their SET certificate is valid for employment in Himachal Pradesh before submitting the form.

Ph.D. Exemption From NET, SLET or SET

Eligible Ph.D. holders may be exempted from NET, SLET or SET when the conditions prescribed in the advertisement are fulfilled.

The stated requirements include:

  • The Ph.D. must have been awarded in regular mode.
  • The thesis must have been evaluated by at least two external examiners.
  • An open Ph.D. viva-voce must have been conducted.
  • The candidate must have published at least two research papers based on the Ph.D. work.
  • At least one of the research papers must have appeared in a refereed journal.
  • The candidate must have delivered at least two conference or seminar presentations based on the Ph.D. research.
  • Compliance with the conditions must be certified by the authorised university authority.

Candidates whose M.Phil. or Ph.D. registration was completed under earlier applicable regulations should read the exemption clause in the notification carefully.

Eligibility of SET-2026 Candidates

Candidates who qualify the Himachal Pradesh SET-2026 are also eligible according to the recruitment notices.

If the SET-2026 result is declared after the regular application deadline, HPPSC has stated that the application window will be reopened for eligible SET-2026 candidates.

Such candidates should wait for an official reopening notice instead of attempting to submit an incomplete or unsupported eligibility claim.

Additional Conditions for Physical Education

The Physical Education notification includes additional requirements beyond a relevant Master’s degree.

Candidates generally need:

  • A Master’s degree in Physical Education or Sports Science with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade
  • A consistently good academic record
  • A record of representing a university, college, state or country in recognised competitions or championships
  • NET or another approved national-level eligibility test, unless covered by the permitted Ph.D. exemption
  • Successful completion of the prescribed physical fitness test
  • A medical fitness certificate before undertaking the fitness test

The fitness standards vary according to gender and age. Applicants for Physical Education should read Advertisement No. 42/6-2026 in full before applying.

Desirable Qualification

The notifications also mention knowledge of the customs, manners and dialects of Himachal Pradesh, along with suitability for appointment under the conditions prevailing in the state, as a desirable qualification.

HPPSC Assistant Professor Age Limit

The prescribed age range is 18 to 45 years.

Age will be calculated as of 1 January 2026.

RequirementAge
Minimum age18 years
Maximum age45 years
Cut-off date1 January 2026

The date of birth entered in the application must match the date recorded in the candidate’s Matriculation, Secondary Examination or equivalent certificate.

Once the date of birth has been entered and accepted for the examination, a later request to change it will not normally be considered.

Age Relaxation

A relaxation of five years in the upper age limit is admissible to eligible bonafide candidates belonging to:

  • Scheduled Castes of Himachal Pradesh
  • Scheduled Tribes of Himachal Pradesh
  • Other Backward Classes of Himachal Pradesh
  • Wards of Freedom Fighters of Himachal Pradesh
  • Persons with Disabilities of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Government employees and Ex-Servicemen of Himachal Pradesh receive age relaxation according to the government instructions applicable to them.

The relaxation is available only when a post is reserved for the relevant category in the subject concerned. Candidates should not assume that the same relaxation applies automatically to every subject.

  • File the objection online through the HPPSC system.

A printing, typographical or out-of-syllabus issue in Paper-II should also be reported within five days of the examination.

Provisional Rejection and Representation Period

Applications may initially be accepted on the basis of the candidate’s online claims. HPPSC later scrutinises applications and documents to confirm eligibility.

Candidates who are provisionally rejected are generally given ten days, including Sundays and holidays, to submit a representation with the necessary documents.

The rejection list may be published:

Common Mistakes Candidates Should Avoid

Applying Under the Wrong Advertisement Number

  • Each subject has a different advertisement number. Choosing the wrong advertisement may result in an application being considered for a different subject, and ordinary correction is not available after submission.

Confusing 369 Posts With the Wider 373-Post Count

  • The 369-post total covers Advertisement Nos. 34/6-2026 to 55/6-2026. Music-Vocal has four additional posts under Advertisement No. 33/6-2026.
  • Candidates should identify the exact notification relevant to their subject.

Assuming Every Subject Has Identical Qualifications

  • Most subjects follow the Master’s degree and NET, SLET or SET framework. However, subjects such as Physical Education and specialised performing arts may contain additional eligibility conditions.
  • Always read the individual notification.

Uploading Blurred or Incomplete Certificates

  • Unreadable documents can lead to rejection. Scan both sides of a certificate when information appears on the reverse and ensure that seals, signatures, dates and certificate numbers are visible.

Forgetting the NET, SLET or SET Certificate

  • A candidate claiming eligibility through NET, SLET or SET should upload valid proof. Ph.D. holders claiming exemption must provide documents establishing compliance with the exemption conditions.

Entering an Incorrect Date of Birth

  • The date must match the Matriculation or equivalent certificate. HPPSC does not normally allow a later change.

Claiming an Unavailable Category Relaxation

  • Age or reservation benefits are not automatically available in every subject. Check whether the relevant post is reserved for the category being claimed.

Leaving Paper-I Questions Completely Blank

  • A blank response attracts negative marking under the notified scheme. Candidates who do not want to answer should select option E.

Missing the Answer-Key Objection Window

  • Candidates have a limited objection period. Challenges submitted late, without evidence or without the Rs. 100 per-question fee are not accepted.

Waiting Until the Final Day

  • Heavy traffic, payment failures or document-upload errors can cause problems near the deadline. Applicants should complete the form several days before 14 July 2026.

Submitting the Form Without a Final Review

  • Once submitted, most fields cannot be edited. Review the complete preview before clicking the final submission button.
